Genealogy Holidays : Requirements and general information
Before Coming on your Genealogy Holiday
If you have not already done so, talk to relatives and gain as much information as you can about your ancestors. This includes, where possible, dates and places of births, marriages and deaths and where they lived at different points in their lives. Information about their occupations would also be useful. All information gained will enable us to trace your ancestors more easily.
What You Will Need to Bring with You
· Dates and places of birth of your more immediate ancestors dating back to before and including 1900. Ideally this should be both paternal and maternal lines. If you do not have information about any relatives before 1900, please contact me so that we can ensure we have obtained it prior to your holiday. We will need approximately 4-6 weeks to obtain the relevant birth certificates so please allow for this when booking your holiday.
· Photographs, good quality photocopies of photographs or scanned photos saved onto CD (preferred) of family members and ancestors
· Any family documents, good quality photocopies of family documents or scanned documents saved onto CD (preferred) such as birth, marriage, death certificates, obituaries, newspaper cuttings, etc. In fact, any documentation that will help to give ‘life’ to your family history books
· Recommended, though not essential, a laptop computer. This would enable us to download the recommended genealogy software* straight onto your computer and provide you with greater flexibility/study time during your hollday. Wireless enabled laptops are particularly suitable, enabling guests to work in different locations in the villa and increasing connection time to the internet. Worth considering are laptops from Dell Computers who offer wireless enabled laptops for under £400. For those unable to bring laptops, information gained can be saved onto CD or recorded in notebooks ready to add to your genealogy software programme when you return home. During your holiday, you will be given precise instructions how to download the software programme, enter relevant information and create your own family history books.
*The genealogy software that we use is a very powerful tool that:- · provides a data base of all facts related to a particular ancestor including their dates of birth/christenings/marriages/deaths · enables you to see in a window at any one time, names of a particular ancestor and spouse, their parents and their children + relevant birth and death dates · enables you to enter information on each ancestor such as occupation, census details, etc, and scanned images of photos and documents · allows you create family history books, timelines, charts and trees at the click of a button
Having tried various other genealogy programmes, we rate this software above the others. At around £18, It also represents extremely good value for money in comparison with other programmes and can be purchased by credit card and downloaded directly from the publisher.
